Practical Solutions

Cost-effective changes that work with typical FNQ construction

How to Improve Energy Performance in Cairns & FNQ

  • Roof and Wall Colour Selection

Light coloured roofs and walls are the most cost-effective solution to improving performance. Contrary to popular belief, wall colour often has a greater impact than roof colour in tropical climates.

  • External Shading

Wide eaves and verandahs significantly reduce solar heat gain through walls and glazing. Try to limit any exposure to the sun, particularly from the west. External shading is far more effective than internal blinds.

  • Design for Airflow

Cross-ventilation is key in humid tropical climates, taking advantage of any natural breezes. Ceiling fans can compensate for design. Larger, well-placed ceiling fans significantly improve comfort.

  • Ceiling Insulation Matters

Ceiling insulation performs significantly better than under-roof insulation as it isolates the living space from the hot roof cavity.

  • Optimise Glazing

Reduce west-facing glazing where possible, ensure all glazing has adequate shading from eaves and verandahs. Low-E and double-glazed windows perform well, however are expensive and often not required in tropical climates.

  • Solar PV

Solar PV can offset all of a home’s energy use, while design improvements often only reduce cooling costs.
