Our Story

Energy Check is a family-owned Queensland business providing energy efficiency assessments for builders, designers, certifiers and homeowners.

Established in 2003 by Nigel Thorogood, the business continues today under Alistair and Emily Thorogood, maintaining the same trusted service across Queensland.

The Beginning - Nigel Thorogood

Nigel began working in building energy efficiency regulation in 1999, contributing to the development of the first energy efficiency requirements introduced into the BCA in 2003.

In 2003, he founded Energy Check. Over the next 23 years, Nigel built and operated the business, assessing over 15,000 homes across Queensland before retiring in mid-2026.

You will now find Nigel operating his kiteboard out of Mission Beach.

The Transition

To support a smooth handover, Alistair completed training across more than 500 projects over an 18-month transition period, working closely with Nigel before taking over the business.

The goal was simple, ensure a seamless transition for clients, with no change to the quality, consistency or turnaround Energy Check is known for.

Today - Alistair & Emily Thorogood

Alistair first worked with Energy Check while still in high school in 2009. He later spent eight years working as a tradesman before completing a Bachelor of Engineering and working as a Mechanical and Reliability Engineer in Weipa.

Emily brings a practical background, starting her career in her family’s bakery before moving into heavy equipment operation in Weipa. This experience built a strong work ethic, attention to detail and a straightforward approach to getting the job done.

Today, Alistair and Emily lead Energy Check as a second-generation family business, combining engineering and practical experience to deliver clear communication, consistent quality and reliable turnaround times.
